To lead the planning, implementation, execution, monitoring and analysis of garden rose trials in alignment with commercial, quality, and breeding objectives. The role requires technical growing expertise, attention to detail, and the ability to manage resources, data, and people effectively. It bridges production, research, and commercial interests. Although very occasionally, there may be a requirement for working additional hours during the growing season, and some weekend or bank holiday working. Overtime/ time off in lieu will be given.
Plan and manage all garden rose trials, including the implementation, maintenance, assessment and reporting of results.
Trials include varietal, growing method, substrate, irrigation, and pest/disease control trials.
Maintain accurate and detailed records of trials including methodology, conditions, assessment data and outcomes, including use of trials data recording/ management software
Monitor plant health, growth rates, flowering times, colour development, scent, and any other required information where relevant.
Evaluate performance against trial objectives (e.g. commercial suitability, disease resistance, production efficiency)
Collaborate with breeders, suppliers, commercial teams, and production staff to shape trial priorities.
Manage and coordinate the trial maintenance team and seasonal workers involved in trials activities, collaborating with other managers in department as required to optimise efficient use of resources.

Proven experience in commercial horticulture, ideally ornamental/roses. Desirable would be a degree/HND in Horticulture, Plant Science, or related field.

We have an opportunity available for a Site Operative/Driver to join our small and friendly team based at our Melville Nursery, Lasswade. The position will allow you to be part of the daily horticultural workings of the nursery which involves working outdoors year round. Horticultural experience is not essential for this role as training will be provided, although it would be advantageous.

Production Team Leader

How would you like to work at one of the most visited gardens in the East of England and assist with the day to day running of our Nursery and its diverse collection of plants?
We are looking for an enthusiastic Production Team Leader to join our dynamic team at Hyde Hall, famous not only for our Dry Garden, but also for the more the innovative Winter Garden and Global Growth Vegetable Garden.
The Nursery is the engine room behind the whole of the garden and performs the vital function in providing the garden with approx. 4500 plants raised from cuttings and over 5000 plants raised from seed which include tender/hardy annuals and perennials, trees and shrubs.
As a Production Team Leader, this post provides you the opportunity to work primarily in the Nursery, where you will be responsible for the day to day running of all parts of the Nursery and managing the propagation needs of the garden teams including direct line management of the Global Growth Vegetable Garden horticulturist.
We have a small team so you will therefore need to be a good team player but also be responsible and capable of lone working.
An in depth knowledge of propagation techniques is essential for this role as is experience in people management, organisation and pest/disease knowledge.

RHS Hyde Hall has 3 national plant collections of Viburnum, Colchicum and Pelargonium and the nursery plays a key role in safeguarding these collections through propagation, care and maintenance.
Our Nursery site is large and needs to be kept as clean and weed free as possible so a fair amount of weeding, strimming and mowing will be expected so some machinery experience is desirable.
Guide and deliver the practical educational programmes to students, members of the public and staff
You should have a RHS Diploma in Practical Horticulture, HNC in Plant Skills, Foundation Degree in Horticulture, Kew/Edinburgh Diploma, plus a guideline of three years’ practical experience in a Nursery setting ideally with some supervisory responsibilities. As a Horticulturist you will be part of the Hilltop Garden Team with particular focus on the Queen Mothers Garden with its mixed borders of trees, shrubs and perennials originally established by Dick and Helen Robinson, the gardens founders.
This role will offer you an opportunity to be involved in reviewing the design and layout of the Queen Mothers Garden and revitalise and enhance the plantings in this established part of the garden and therefore make your mark.
Sitting in the heart of the garden the Queen Mothers Garden also provides a link to the Australasian Garden and the Dry Garden.
As well as carrying out maintenance and enhancements to the Queen Mothers Garden you will work with the wider team carrying out cultivation and day-to-day maintenance of the other wide ranging ornamental plantings the team oversees from the classic Rose Garden and Herbaceous Border to our iconic Dry Garden as well as the island beds in the Hilltop Garden.

In depth knowledge of various propagation techniques for all types of plant material (herbaceous and woody) plus good general knowledge of ornamental horticulture
RHS Diploma in Practical Horticulture, HNC in Plant Skills, Foundation Degree in Horticulture, Kew/Edinburgh Diploma or equivalent practical experience
Experience in managing people and good organisation skills
Ability to work as part of a team but also the ability to work alone at times
Relevant practical experience in a Nursery/production role
