    • Report to the plant area manager

    • Maintain high standards of plant health of both indoor and outdoor plants

Production Team Leader

  • How would you like to work at one of the most visited gardens in the East of England and assist with the day to day running of our Nursery and its diverse collection of plants?

    We are looking for an enthusiastic Production Team Leader to join our dynamic team at Hyde Hall, famous not only for our Dry Garden, but also for the more the innovative Winter Garden and Global Growth Vegetable Garden.

     

    The Nursery is the engine room behind the whole of the garden and performs the vital function in providing the garden with approx. 4500 plants raised from cuttings and over 5000 plants raised from seed which include tender/hardy annuals and perennials, trees and shrubs.

     

    As a Production Team Leader, this post provides you the opportunity to work primarily in the Nursery, where you will be responsible for the day to day running of all parts of the Nursery and managing the propagation needs of the garden teams including direct line management of the Global Growth Vegetable Garden horticulturist.

    We have a small team so you will therefore need to be a good team player but also be responsible and capable of lone working.

    An in depth knowledge of propagation techniques is essential for this role as is experience in people management, organisation and pest/disease knowledge.

     

    • Lead, manage, develop and motivate a team of Horticulturists, Students and Volunteers to deliver objectives and projects in line with the RHS strategy

    • Day to day running of the Nursery site and propagation needs of the garden

    • You will also be assisting in running our plant reception/ quarantine  facility which ensures we are compliant with all RHS and national regulations with regards to incoming plant material to the garden.  With this comes the responsibility of ensuring all plant material that enters the garden is thoroughly checked for pest and diseases, plant passports and quarantined accordingly. 

    • RHS Hyde Hall has 3 national plant collections of Viburnum, Colchicum and Pelargonium and the nursery plays a key role in safeguarding these collections through propagation, care and maintenance.

    • Our Nursery site is large and needs to be kept as clean and weed free as possible so a fair amount of weeding, strimming and mowing will be expected so some machinery experience is desirable.

    • Guide and deliver the practical educational programmes to students, members of the public and staff

    • You should have a RHS Diploma in Practical Horticulture, HNC in Plant Skills, Foundation Degree in Horticulture, Kew/Edinburgh Diploma, plus a guideline of three years’ practical experience in a Nursery setting ideally with some supervisory responsibilities.  Commensurate experience, in lieu of qualifications, will be considered provided the criteria can still be met.

    • In depth knowledge of various propagation techniques for all types of plant material (herbaceous and woody) plus good general knowledge of ornamental horticulture

    • Support and train the growing team in crop walking and plant health monitoring

    • Manage the chemical store, order stock, and ensure compliance with storage and application regulations

    • Act as point of contact for technical queries and APHA inspections

    • You have experience in crop protection and growing - this could be in ornamentals or edible crops.

    • Participate in data collection and digital documentation of breeding and trialling progress.

    • Work within the industry regulatory guidelines, with consideration for health and safety.

    • Assist with any other required work to deliver the rose breeding and trialling programme.

    •   RHS or related horticultural training/qualifications is preferred, or equivalent experience in plant breeding, horticulture, or a nursery setting.

    • An understanding of plant genetics, pollination techniques, and propagation methods preferred but not essential.

    • Passion for roses and ornamental plant breeding.

    • Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions throughout the year

    • Strong attention to detail and excellent record-keeping skills

    • Proficiency in using horticultural equipment.

    • The ability to use spraying equipment; a PA1 and PA6 spraying licence is desirable, but not essential.  Training can be provided.

    • Passfield and other Crop Production record keeping and paperwork to agreed timescales and in compliance with accreditation schemes

    • Have proven experience in plant propagation and/or commercial horticulture

    • Be good leaders, team builders and motivators of people, with proven Supervisory experience

    • Be logical, methodical, accurate and organised with good attention to detail

    • Have excellent organisational skills with the ability to keep several tasks live at any one time

    • Preferably have a horticultural qualification

    • Professional, reliable and a good communicator

    • Excellent record keeping skills

  • Location: Chichester, West Sussex

    Salary: £28,000 - £33,000 DOE + relocation support

    Hours:

    November to February 32.5 hours per week

    • Monday to Friday 08:00 - 15:45

    March to July 44 hours per week

    • Monday to Thursday 07:30 - 17:15

    • Friday 07:30 - 16:15

    • Weekend duties on a rota system (March to September)

    August to October 39 hours per week

    • Monday to Thursday 08:00 - 16:45

    • Friday 08:00 - 15:45
