Looking for a hands-on role where you can see the results of your work every day?
This is a fantastic opportunity to join a sixth-generation family business with over 130 years of growing heritage.

Assistant Grower Manager

Choose plants. Choose any old website. Choose annual bedding that needs watering every day and replacing every spring. Choose plants sprayed with fungicide that look good on the shelf but are DOA in your garden. Choose 100 plants for £12.99 because some of them will survive, right? Choose plants flown in from a hothouse somewhere that won’t last in the UK. Choose a website written by AI that tells you to plant tomatoes in shade and tries to sell you a wickerwork stag. Choose pesticides, weedburners and a chemical covered square of lawn that you mow every Sunday morning and wonder why you can’t hear the birds singing.
But why would you want to choose plants like that?
At Roots, we go deeper.
You don’t have time for that nonsense and neither do we. We’re too busy getting stuck in at the nursery, mudsplattered wellies squelching through fields as our UK growers proudly show off their plants.
We trust our growers to know the best way of doing things. Because they’ve been growing the traditional way for decades and doing it well. Planting trees in the fields and watching them grow, pruning in all weathers, excitedly waiting for their new seedlings to come up and working with nature rather than against it, because that’s the right thing to do, not the cheapest.

We're establishing a new, modern horticultural facility to support a prominent online plant retailer. We are looking for an enthusiastic and dedicated Junior Grower to join our team. This is an excellent opportunity for someone with a foundational understanding of horticulture or a strong desire to learn and develop a career in plant production.
Working under the guidance of our experienced growers, you will be integral to cultivating high-quality plants for our customers. This role offers hands-on experience in a new, technologically advanced environment.
Plant Care: Lead a unit assisting with daily plant care tasks, including watering, feeding, pruning, and monitoring plant health.
Propagation & Potting: Support propagation activities and assist with potting and re-potting plants as needed.
Pest & Disease Monitoring: Learn to identify common plant pests and diseases, reporting findings to senior growers.
Environmental Control: Assist with monitoring and adjusting environmental conditions (e.g., temperature, humidity, light) within growing areas.
Data Recording: Maintain accurate records of plant treatments, growth stages, and other relevant horticultural data.
Site Maintenance: Contribute to the general upkeep and cleanliness of the nursery, including tidying growing areas and equipment.
-
Basic horticultural knowledge or a strong interest and willingness to learn about plant cultivation. Relevant qualifications (e.g., college course, apprenticeship) are a plus.
Enthusiastic and eager to learn about commercial plant production.
Reliable and a good team player, capable of following instructions and working independently when required.
Attention to detail when performing tasks such as watering or identifying plant issues.
Ability to perform physical tasks associated with nursery work, including lifting, bending, and standing for extended periods in various weather conditions (e.g., inside glasshouses).
Basic communication skills to interact with team members.

Plant knowledge and/or video experience are a bonus, but if you have buckets of enthusiasm and natural on-camera talent, we’d love to see what you can do. You might be a presenter, or the one behind the camera - or ideally you can do both.
Whether you’re an established presenter with your own gardening channel, a student or graduate in horticulture, or an enthusiastic amateur gardener – any age, any background – this could be your chance to turn passion into a reliable income.
